Êkhô Sport & Montgomery International School: a successful partnership to promote inclusivity through sports
In partnership with Êkhô Sports, Montgomery International School teaches its students an understanding of how people with disabilities apprehend the world around them.
For the third consecutive year, Montgomery International School is partnering with Êkhô Sport, a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing sports and recreational activities for children who are deaf, hard of hearing, dysphasic, or have hearing impairments, as well as hearing children aged 6 and over. Êkhô Sport aims to foster cultural and social diversity, promote gender equality, and ensure that sports activities are accessible to all, regardless of ability or background.
Through this continued collaboration, MIS students have the unique opportunity to engage with activities and resources that mimic the experiences of deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
For example, students are introduced to tools such as vibrating wristbands, which simulate the experience of being unable to hear sounds, allowing them to better understand and empathise with their peers. They were also introduced to a graphic novel "Le rêve d'Amstrong" to help them better understand the challenges faced by the deaf community. By blending the appeal of comic books with physical activities, this programme not only helps students gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by deaf children, but also fosters a stronger sense of civic responsibility and engagement.
Moreover, the partnership offers students the chance to directly interact with deaf children, enhancing mutual understanding and breaking down barriers between hearing and non-hearing communities.
For example, an event was organised in collaboration with Brussels Football at Montgomery International School bringing together MIS students and deaf students from the Centre Provincial d'Enseignement Spécial de Mons (CPESM) , fostering a sense of unity while breaking down language barriers and celebrating diversity. During the event, Êkhô Sport highlighted its unique features, including the connected watch and football-themed visuals, designed to facilitate optimal interaction with deaf students, ensuring they could engage more fully in activities and discussions. By integrating visual cues and tactile feedback. Êkhô Sport demonstrated its commitment to creating accessible, inclusive environments where everyone, regardless of hearing ability, can participate and thrive.
This collaboration with Êkhô Sport is an invaluable learning experience for all students, and aligns perfectly with our school's mission, i.e. building an inclusive school community where everyone can play, learn, and grow together.
Although universal, hearing impairment remains an invisible disability

At Montgomery International School, most of our students come from abroad, speak two or three languages and add much to the character of the school. We also attract Belgian families and long term expats who are looking for international openness and quality teaching and learning.
