Service Learning

Community service  is a core value at Montgomery International School. We implement service activities within our school as well as with external programmes.

Service Learning in PYP

Service Learning is an engaging way for students to connect their classroom knowledge with meaningful, real-world experiences. By participating in projects that benefit their community, students not only gain new skills and insights but also learn the importance of making a positive impact. This hands-on approach to learning encourages students to take initiative, work collaboratively, and reflect on how their actions contribute to the greater good.

At our school, Service Learning is woven into the student experience through dedicated projects lasting four weeks. Each student selects a project aligned with their interests and passions, ranging from environmental initiatives to creative arts and community outreach, with activities including Eco Warriors, Sunshine Squad, Culinary Club, and Winter Singers, among others. Students are actively involved in planning the projects, and all reflect on their experience of the project, giving them opportunities to learn from their actions. At the conclusion of each four-week period, students choose a new project, ensuring a dynamic and diverse learning journey.

Service Learning in MYP

The Service Learning programme at MIS encourages MYP students to take initiative and engage in meaningful activities each semester, guided by their personal interests. Students participate in both self-initiated projects and class-based activities that connect to the curriculum, working alongside their subject teachers.

The primary goal of the programme is to develop caring, responsible individuals who are empowered to make a positive impact on their communities and the environment. After each service activity, students are encouraged to reflect on their experiences to enhance their learning and growth.

Through these experiences, students develop a deeper appreciation for community involvement and gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by their local environment.

In-School Activities Linked to the Curriculum:

  • Anti-bullying campaigns (English LL)
  • Children's rights awareness (Civics)
  • Creating a short theatre play based on a political issue (Theatre)
  • Designing a magazine/booklet to raise awareness about Fast Fashion (English LA)
  • Managing and disposing of chemical waste (Chemistry)

Out-of-School Activities (Initiated by Students with School Support):

  • Volunteering at an animal shelter to care for animals in need
  • Assisting at a local food kitchen by preparing and distributing meals
  • Spending time with and supporting the elderly at a local residence
  • Helping hospital staff and patients through various initiatives
  • Organising park clean-ups to promote environmental responsibility
  • Baking and sharing treats to spread joy in the community
  • Fundraising for various causes to create tangible impact

Through these initiatives, students are encouraged to develop skills that benefit both themselves and others, while making meaningful contributions to society.

DP Service Requirement

As part of the IB Diploma Programme, our DP students actively engage in the CAS programme (Creativity, Activity, Service), which encourages them to explore their passions, develop new skills, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. A key component of CAS is participating in a service activity of their choice, with guidance and support from the school.

This unique experience allows students to address issues of local and global significance, fostering personal growth and a deeper understanding of their role in creating positive change.

Over the years, our students have demonstrated remarkable initiative and creativity in their service activities. They have:

  • Collected and donated money and materials for various associations.
  • Organised board game sessions for residents of a local home.
  • Planned engaging events for PYP and MYP students.
  • Participated in "clean beaches" initiatives along the seaside.

This year, we are excited to collaborate with the local organization Serve the City, which offers a variety of volunteering opportunities. Through this partnership, students can:

  • Assist local children with their homework.
  • Help prepare food packages for individuals in need.
  • Volunteer at language schools to support learners in improving their French and English.

By engaging in these meaningful activities, our students not only make a difference in their communities but also cultivate empathy, leadership, and a lifelong commitment to service.
